Kentucky's First Energy Cooperative Producing Green Power...

Bavarian Waste Services always had plenty of methane gas at its landfill, but the problem was how to harness it economically to generate green electrical power. After Millions of dollars of investing in our community, we set the standard in innovative approaches to alternative sources of energy in Kentucky.

Thanks to the evolution of technology, Bavarian was able to dedicate part of our Walton landfill to converting trash into green energy. Methane gas is produced by the decomposing material in the landfill. Then the East Kentucky Power Cooperative converts the methane into Enviro-Watts. The facility produces 3.4 megawatts of power, which is enough for 3500 homes.

"We now have green power in Kentucky for the first time," says Public Service Commission Chairman Huelsmann. "We have methane gas that otherwise would be harmful to the environment and are using it to produce energy. This gas is going to last forever. Imagine where that could lead us." To Help Protect & Enhance The Public Health and Environment

Even before the passage of the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) of 1976, solid/special waste generators and stakeholders recognized the need for specialized services for the collection of, and management of, post-consumer wastes and manufacturing process wastes. The last thirty years of RCRA regulations has witnessed the development of more specialized services serving a wide spectrum of customers ranging from individual households to federal facilities and manufacturing firms. The establishment of a Universal Waste category by the United States Environmental Protection Agency was a significant milestone in the recognition of the needed role for such specialized waste services. Exciting Changes at Bavarian

Building a Better Community is Our Goal

For 75-years Bavarian has strived to be a responsible environmental steward. This not only includes handling the waste responsibly, but it also includes helping improve the communities we serve and to create a higher quality of life for their residents. Recently, we have embarked on two projects to do just that in our hometown of Walton.

New Fleet Wash System

Currently we are in the process of installing a cutting-edge fleet wash system at our Landfill facility from Interclean Corporation.

What are the benefits you ask? Well, they’re abundant. First, it will go a long way in keeping the access roads to our facility clean for our neighbors and customers. As the equipment exits the landfill, it will run through the truck/tire wash and remove all the residual material left by the final processing of the waste, thus keeping it where it belongs – at our facility. This will not only be used by our own drivers, it will be equally accessible to the various other haulers conducting business with us too. Secondly, this provides great benefits to our own staff; it will make items such a pre and post trip inspections easier to conduct, makes the equipment easier for our maintenance staff to repair, and it will certainly keep our equipment looking its best!

Because Bavarian believes in Resource Recovery That Makes Sense, of course we’re taking advantage of the model that provides a sediment basin thereby re-circulating, cleansing, and re-using the water. This should all but eliminate the need for a water truck and street sweeper.

Landfill Odor Control System..

A problem that has plagued the industry despite its best efforts to quickly cover inbound waste streams at the landfill has always been the unfortunate side effect of odor. While it is significantly less in the cooler months; summer brings with it a multiplier affect, as does varying waste streams.
